About Reconciliation Australia

What is reconciliation? RA's vision is; for an Australia that recognises the special place and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Australians, values their participation and provides equal life chances for all.

Reconciliation involves justice, recognition and healing. It’s about helping all Australians move forward with a better understanding of the past and how the past affects the lives of Indigenous people today.

Reconciliation involves symbolic recognition of the honoured place of the first Australians, as well as practical measures to address the disadvantage experienced by Indigenous people in health, employment, education and general opportunity
Reconciliation Australia is an independent, not-for-profit organisation established in 2000 by the former Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation. They are a civil society organisation that draws their legitimacy from the Australian people, including the many partners, donors and supporters who work with them for change.

Many Australians are committed to the idea of reconciliation, but don’t know what to do to make a difference. Reconciliation Australia is inviting Australian governments, businesses, peak bodies, non-government and community organisations to develop and pursue individual Reconciliation Action Plans.

Reconciliation Action Plans provide organisations with information and assistance to help them identify and develop business practices that contribute to the well-being and quality of life of Indigenous Australians.

By addressing the key areas of housing, health, education, training, employment, social and communal relationships and law and justice, we can close the 17-year gap in life expectancy between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
